Engineering Manager

As an engineering manager you facilitate communication and delegation of tasks across the product development team. You seek to provide opportunities for your direct reports to develop their skills while also holding them accountable to deliverables critical to the bottom line. You coach your reports to insist on the highest standards of quality, have bias for action, and disagree and commit.

In your day to day work you will

  • invent and simplify standard operating procedures for tracking tasks and resource allocation
  • validate your assumptions with cross-functional stakeholders and ensure solutions continue to meet requirements once implemented
  • work to clarify ambiguities, drive alignment across the team, and build trust and confidence in proposed solutions
  • check in regularly one on one with your direct reports to ensure requirements are soundly communicated and document feedback to share with leadership to help continuously maintain a positive, rewarding, and productive work culture
  • find ways to emphasize your reports’ superpowers and seek out resources to develop their skills
  • report to the VP of Product and Engineering on a regular basis with qualitative and quantitative datapoints measuring progress and exercise judgment around when to escalate urgent issues.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years in a project or program management role in product development and/or engineering
  • 5+ years in product development and/or engineering
  • Experience working with task management software tools (e.g. JIRA, Asana)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Prior experience in a coaching/mentoring/management role with respect to career development of colleagues or direct reports
  • Experience with project management frameworks (e.g. CPM, Gantt charts, etc)
  • Experience with hiring and interviewing
  • Prior experience in hardware development

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline
  • Prior experience in software development in conjunction with hardware
  • Experience in development of Iot systems
  • Experience with engineering for hardware safety and regulatory compliance (e.g. UL, FCC)
  • Experience with Agile development and Kanban resource allocation methodologies
